With over 26 tracks of mostly previously unreleased music, it wasn’t going to be long before the much heralded Chronicles album would take the world by storm….

Critical acclaim came soon after its release.


And world leaders reacted with gusto.



But how did this album end up having so much global success?


THE ARCHIVES ARE UNEARTHED

After much painstaking research into the master tape vaults, a collection was unearthed that the world had to hear.


Ancient lyrics were closely examined.


The old tracks were remastered:



And the album was finally released.


INITIAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN

The first stage of marketing for the new album was fairly low key and concentrated on the band’s heavy metal homeland  of New Wobh’m.

In tube stations…


Bus stops…


Local shopping centres…


The album became a huge success across the UK…


Because of the snowballing success in the UK and viral social sharing on the internet, it was decided to market the album internationally. Below: the Chronicles album became a big success in Russia.


The album sold out fast in Portugal.


And soon went big in America.


THE BACKLASH

It didn’t all go smoothly though. After one TV interview where Ian Dick, in a somewhat John Lennonesque outburst proclaimed that Soldier were “Bigger than Motorhead, Saxon and Ethel the Frog combined” - there was a brief but furious backlash against the band in some diehard NWOBHM fan circles, resulting in public CD burnings.

Motorhead fans were outraged


Some negative TV coverage took place, but created more interest in the band, rather than damage them.


But the protests died out as fast as they appeared and the band continued to reap critical acclaim in the media.



Like any good marketing campaign, the quality of the product eventually propelled enough interest that Chronicles became a cultural/social phenomenon.

Street artists got in on the act:


Graffiti and tattoo artists went to work:


Even Banksy was purported to have had a hand in promoting the bands Live Tour:


Artists everywhere started to appreciate the album cover art and took it on themselves to interpret it in their own styles:


Individual pieces sold for hundreds of thousands at prestigious auction houses:


The inevitable book deal soon followed:


And like all good stories, the book became a movie:


Product endorsement and branding were another source of revenue for the Soldier coffers:
